Soft matter in external fields

We are interested in characterization of the behavior of soft matter systems (liquid crystals, polymers, colloidal solutions) exposed to externally applied fields such as a flow field, or an electric field. We are for example interested in the nonequilibrium distribution of counter ions around a macroion in oscillating electric fields, in crystallization in flow, and in general in self assembly away from thermodynamic equilibrium.

Our goals include:
  • designing better methods of annealng of nanocrystals and colloidal crystals
  • developing new methods for non-equilibrium self assembly of nano- and micro-particles into ordered structures that can be tuned by adjusting the parameters of the external field
